What is Modern Farmhouse Style
Think of modern farmhouses as modern twists on traditional farmhouses. You’ll still have conventional farmhouse elements such as an apron sink but also stylish and trendy options like black matte finishes .” Michael, Vevano Homes Designer
The modern farmhouse style is rooted in traditional farmhouse design. It is practical and comfortable, focused on natural elements, and topped off by modern designs and features. Modern farmhouse design combines contemporary styles’ modern, minimalist approach with rustic references to traditional farmhouse decor.
Modern Farmhouse vs. Modern Farmhouse vs. Traditional Farmhouse
Traditional farmhouse design encourages warmth through natural elements (wood, metal, etc.) and vintage features to create a comfortable yet practical atmosphere. The classic farmhouse style can be described as “shabby chic” because it often uses antique or vintage decor to create a homey, inviting interior. This is similar to interior cottage design.
The traditional farmhouse style is less uniform than modern or contemporary styles, which rely on straight, clean lines and a minimalist, form-follows-function approach to design.
Modern Farmhouse is a modern take on the traditional farmhouse design. It has been simplified with more clean lines. The contemporary style emphasizes simple and useful features. Modern farmhouse designs are distinctive in that they may incorporate modern, industrial, or stylish design options to create unique kitchens that retain the farmhouse feel.
Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Characteristics & Design Tips
There are two ways to approach modern farmhouses. There are two options: You can choose to buy current farmhouse-inspired items (think Shaker cabinets), or you can have traditional fixtures paired with contemporary designs. For example, a rustic farmhouse light could be used in a kitchen with frameless cabinets .” Michael, Vevano Homes Designer
Simple designs and natural elements characterize the Modern Farmhouse. It also features industrial or rustic touches.
Colors
Whites, grays, and blacks dominate modern farmhouse color schemes. Wood tones are also trendy because their timber was used in traditional farmhouse designs.
Shades from the outside can add color pops, but sticking with a natural theme such as navy, Robin’s egg, forest, and sunny yellow is best.
Modern farmhouse colors can be achieved by finding the right balance of warm and cool tones. It will feel more traditional farmhouse-style if the kitchen is filled with warm tones. If all the colors are too cold, it can look too modern. Natural wood floors and fixtures could warm it up. Natural elements such as wood flooring and cabinets can soften the modern farmhouse look.
Cabinets
Modern farmhouse cabinets are typically in the middle of the road regarding design: simple enough but not too detailed. Modern Shaker cabinets are a popular choice for farmhouse kitchens due to their current sleek design and recessed door style.
Traditional Shaker doors had rounded bevels and glazed panels. The modern Shaker cabinet is more uncomplicated, with clean lines and minimal detail that would suit a farmhouse-style kitchen.

White Shaker-style cabinets are the best choice for a classic farmhouse kitchen look. White is the most preferred choice but cabinets in Shaker Gray, and Shaker Dove are also good choices.
Cobbleridge white cabinets are a traditional style choice for those looking for cabinets that are more farmhouse-style. They have enough detail to meet the needs of traditionalists without being too embellished.
Open wooden shelves are another option for modern farmhouse kitchen cabinetry. This allows you to showcase your vintage dishware in a stylish and accessible way.
Modern farmhouse kitchens can be enhanced with dark cabinets that are highlighted on the base or island cabinets. These cabinets will then be surrounded by white Shaker cabinets.
What to Avoid
Some cabinets, like Eastland Antique White, can be too traditional in terms of both color and embellishment—Monte Carlo gloss, with its glossy finish and slab design, may be too modern.
